Kunst + Design am Wöhrder See is a placement for the practical training phase of the Bavarian Fachoberschule, design branch. A design internship can mean four weeks of pushing someone else's artwork around in a layout program. Here it means getting your hands into a process: working a plate, pulling a sheet through the press, seeing what the material gives back — and doing it differently on the next print.

From 1982 to 1987 Ranil Ranasinghe sat on the examination board of the Academy of Fine Arts Nuremberg — for interior architecture, graphic design, textile design and gold- and silversmithing. He knows from both sides of the table what carries weight there.

The practical training phase takes design-branch pupils out of the classroom and into a working studio for several weeks. In Bavaria, roughly 18 weeks of the eleventh school year are set aside for it, split into blocks that alternate with lessons; the placement is usually changed for the second semester. Ranil Ranasinghe works in eight techniques — from etching through material pictures and textile work to gold- and silversmithing. The gallery on this site shows 54 works from them. In supervising Fachoberschule interns, embossing, planographic printing and intaglio printing have been at the centre.
Who supervises
Ranil Ranasinghe studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Nuremberg from 1973 to 1979, in the class for textile art and surface design, graduating with the Diplom. He has taught at Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences, at the Kunstquartier Nuremberg and at the Academy of Fine Arts Nuremberg. Since 1991 he has been supervising the pupils and interns of the state Fachoberschule Nürnberg in textile design and experimental design.
